45 mph top speed after rebuild carb

89 yj new fuel tank sending unit carb pumpvand rebuilt 4.2 motor top speed is 40 mph fills like its got a million tons on the back any thoughts

Do you have a fuel pressure test kit? The fuel pressure should be between 3.5 to 5 psi. Any more and it will flood the carb and run like you describe.
If you don't have a pressure test kit, you can probably find a free loaner from an auto parts store like AutoZone.

Yep, I'd be testing the fuel pressure to start with.

Are You getting full gas pedal? Is it sputtering or surging and smoking black smoke out the tail pipe. Is it backfiring up the carb. Did you mess with the timing?

Its blowing a little black smoke and just before changing gears the rpms are high for each gear it starts sputtering till i shift the its good till next gear rpms out in 5th it sputters alot
