Hey all, time to ask for a little help.

I purchased a lock tumbler set for my '92YJ and changed out the ignition key first. Pretty straight forward by removing the steering wheel, goofy snap ring, turn signal switch and prying the key tumbler out. This is a non-tilt steering column.

The part I didn't do was remove the key buzzer switch which lead to installation problems while trying to slide the new tumbler in and once in the key wouldn't turn. While messing with the switch removal I ended up breaking off one of the buzzer switch contacts.

In doing my research, it looks like the function of the buzzer switch is a reminder that the key is in the ignition. This never worked as far as I know so it must have been unplugged at some point.

So after breaking the switch I decided to leave the switch out and put it all back together. The new key and tumbler works good as new, the steering locks, all is good... until I hooked up the batter and turned the key. Nothing, no lights, no starter, nothing. The headlights work, so the new battery is good. Ran when parked.

Here's my question: Is that buzzer switch required to start the engine? Again all I find is it controls the buzzer, nothing to do with the ignition wiring.

My guess is I pulled out a wire somewhere at the base of the steering column as I was moving the turn signal switch.

Any other ideas?

Thanks, Cheers.

Update about the buzzer switch. It only controls the buzzer and has nothing to do with the ignition circuit.

I checked the wire harness connecter along the column and all was good. Jiggled the key a few more times and got it to rotate more into the run and start positions. For some reason it seems to be hanging up when going between the steering wheel unlocked position and run/start position. Rotating the key to the off and lock position is no problem.

I'll look around some more and maybe check the actual ignition switch down on the top of the column. It looks like it's adjustable and maybe something got out of whack when I installed the new tumbler.

It's all back together now and the loaner tools are headed back to Autozone.

Problem identified, solution.. well..

Tools are returned so I'll just deal with it for now.

I found the key release lever will not spring to the full up position which allows the key to rotate to the run/start position. If it barely touch the lever it pops up so I can fully rotate the key to start.

Annoying, but That's what my problem is. I sprayed some lube in there but that didn't help. Something with the new tumbler might be binding the lever.
