Fan / Radiator Shroud Question

I'm looking for a fan shroud for my 1990 Jeep YJ AMC 258 I6.

I've seen some claiming to be for my model jeep and engine, but they don't look like the part in the official Jeep maintenance guide.

I'm not sure that the shroud is actually necessary. What's everyone's opinions on whether it's necessary or not?

So, does the shroud help with overheating?
Yes. Instead of the fan pulling air from around the radiator, it's forced to pull air THOUGH the radiator. Keep in mind that this helps at lower speeds. Higher road speeds there's more air being forced though the radiator than the fan could possibly ever move on it's own, so if you're getting warm at highway speeds you likely have another issue.

I haven’t doubled checked it, so don’t kill me if I’m wrong, but I believe the 4 volt pattern is the same in all radiator from YJ to TJ. I’m pretty sure any 4.0 or 4.2 shroud will do.

It may look a bit different however. You do need the shroud because as Downs said, it ensures that the fan pulls air strictly through the radiator.

Thank you. What's crazy though is that the fan shroud shown there is for the 2.5 liter 4 cyl engine instead of the 4.0 or 4.2 liter engines. Been beating my head against a wall trying to figure out how none of the shrouds I've found for the 4.2 looked like that. Seems like Chrysler messed up in their parts catalog diagram.

It’s just an illustration. It’s not representative. The part number is correct.

YOUR CARS VIN CODE TELLS WHAT ENGINE WAS THERE, DAY 1, NEW. VIN CODE DIGIT 8
This is cover the FSM full service manual chapter 1.
when you buy jeep check that out first.

open hood, fact engine, see cowling to right of brake booster, with vin and all other nice jeep codes there? bingo.
drivers door has tag too with more secret codes. even has paint code
hood up, look under hood ,up and under see EPA tag, USA> tells more, and 2.5L marked clear as day on mine.

the drawing in the book is just drafted drawing, if you google your engine (actual) for fan shrouds. you'd find real photos.
first hits, just simply googling, or BING, what every you want.
and click images. or do videos

here is video
see the shroud there.
here

crown and omix-ada, make them, not jeep this old ever.

it can be tricky some are for radiators with off set cap
best is buy one used. googling, ebay ,etc.
not told is your radiator still stock after 30+ years? most are not.

the parts book only shows 2 shrouds for 1990 4 and then the 6cylinder, it does not mention size (displacement)
5204-0291 is cyl shroud. the drawing is only generic shape.
dorman and OMIX and crown make shrouds.
ok found it, 6cyl

Been beating my head against a wall trying to figure out how none of the shrouds I've found for the 4.2 looked like that. Seems like Chrysler messed up in their parts catalog diagram.

the 2.5L has its own shroud,
91 is different to
even 91 up have differ. shroud for RHD cars , say sold to UK (england)
the book does no to lie to you . just read it.

the rad in you car maybe,. for 2.5L
and lots of other things wrong, on 30 year old jeeps, gee, endless , in the wild all wrong.

OP we all know the feeling 30 year old jeeps (
1/2 the parts are missing, wrong parts or dead
I put $2500 in parts in mine just now. not my first or last jeep and 100%^ expected to find all that wrong. I've restored many, (sold them all but 3)
we expect it.
all new cooling parts new (all), end to end. but lucky me shroud not wrong/missing.
used parts for old jeeps are google event, (not wanting to go full electric) the free FSM and free parts book here shows the P/n ,
the p/n can be searched world wide.
and get hits. (for sure fleabay(sic)

the stock fan has HUGE CFM, (cubic feet /minute flows) like nothing else.period. a thing to keep i mind,
the shroud is not an options, it sucks from the core, not from engine bay air. hot and filty)
keep the RAD front bug free, in Florida you know what i mean.
fan belt on mine is set to 100psi.(sp.tols) serp. or it slips. mines 95.not 90 ,so check your free FSM for that.
jeep has almost no 33 year old parts in stock,,. so google or ask others for the p/n, and we did,.
and google found many photos of yours, world wide I6
easy as falling off a log that, 2 fingers hunting and pecking away.
i'd say no other car this old has such a huge aftermarket source of parts.JEEP. (jeep dealers here show none to nill this old)
if not, I'd sell all mine. for sure.

read it again is says at the top 6 CYLINDERS, in this case/year that means 4.0 and 4.2L both. ( they share some common parts )
read parts list again for YJ only and only 4.2 and the 6 cylinded pages
yes the books are complex for 1 reasons , they show all versions of 1car there. YJ, sold world wide too and are not the same car
ever go to UK and look, under hood,OMG not the same.RHD. (knowning that tells you to ignore none USA parts photos googling etc)

those are drafting photos,
we use CAD now and some new Jeep CAD drawings are even worse on the web parts pages.look like hens scratching from Mars.
learn to use P/n of jeep part real and google it. do not fear googling just do it.
where else can you find, 100 billiion photos for free>? where>?
just it for you. ,higher than I can count.
