Engine keeps running after key removal

I have an 88 with the 2.5l. Recently the engine keeps running after turning off the key for about 3 seconds, or sputters till it dies. This varies, sometimes it will turn off, but if hot, stays running. It's more embarrising then an real issue to hear the engine clunk clunk till it shuts off.

What would cause this?

I've recently changed the plugs, wires, & cap.

if did not have the problem before you change parts . you may have a plug problem being a hotter range. the correct plug is champion RC12LYC{412}

Okay, this may be the problem. I installed Autolite Platinum Spark Plug AP985.

the autolite platinum will last longer, higher in price, the champion is a l cheap o, but will do a better job. please keep us posted on how you come out.good luck

What type of gas do you use? As an experiment try Chevron. Many years ago I had the same problem with a Chevy 5.0 and that did the trick. I tried the cheapest (Arco) to the most expensive (Union 76) and Chevron was the only one that worked. But again, that was 30+ years ago.
