I have a 94 yj 4.0L i think its an ax-15 transmission but i dont know much about it, it is a manual. The transmission is starting to go out in it, any opinions on what to get? Should i look around for a remaned ax-15? I also plan down the road to put a new motor in it, I was looking at the 4.6/4.7 titan motor because its relatively cheap and they will build and add like a cam and everything into it. Any opinions on this motor transmission combo? Or just a general suggestion on what to upgrade to?

The AX15 is definitely the better of the bunch for transmissions in jeeps. Considering all the mods needed to change to?? Id rebuild it or get a rebuilt one. Far as the engine goes, the shy is the limit, how much you wanna spend? The 4.0 is about as bullet proof as they come but no ball of fire. But hey, speed kills, drive a jeep as its said.

We offer rebuild kits, upgrade parts, rebuilt, and new transmissions for the AX15. Let us know how we can help. We have lots of technical support as well, just call or email with questions.

On the engine side of things, we always recommend an LS swap ;)

I am planning on swapping a 350 SBC and adapting it to the AX-15. Just like Gilaguy23 said, the AX-15 is a very strong transmission. Novak Conversions makes really good adapter plates, so that, in my opinion, is the best option. You would also have to factor in custom front and rear driveshafts, transfer-case adapter (you might want to upgrade because the np231j might not hold up to V-8 power, and if you're swapping in a Titan engine, you need a standalone PCM and the full wiring harness. You would just have a lot to consider, especially for a less popular engine for swaps like this.

Great points and thanks for the shout out.

One thing to note, the NP231J is rated higher than the AX15. We put them behind V8 power all the time without any issue. For heavily built V8's, extreme offroad builds, etc. it may not be a good option but for the majority of people using the Jeep in moderate offroad conditions it is just fine.

I picked up a new AX-15 from Novak when I swapped my YJ from auto to manual and I have no regrets on the purchase. I decided I wanted to have one thing that I knew for sure, was in good operating condition when I rebuilt the Jeep and did the swap. They were great to deal with and my Jeep shifts like butter.
