I know, I know. It's been discussed before. But I cannot get a straight answer even from the local Jeep shops. I've got a 91 with the 2.5l and a plastic tank. Now, I assume its a 15 gallon cause that's all I've been able to put in it before. I need a fuel pump, cause the sending unit doesn't work and I have no guage reading. Just reads over full all the time until the last few drops where it drops to the full line. I cannot for the life of me find a fuel pump for a 15 gallon tank. Does anyone have a part number or know what I can do here? OR is it a plastic 20 gal and I can only get 15 in because of the vent tube? If so, should I be able to cut it back and buy a 20 gal fuel pump and sending unit? And if so is it the square top or round top fuel pump? I'm asking all this because I don't want to drop the tank on my daily without knowing for sure I can fix it and make it to work tomorrow. Thanks!!

You have a 20 gallon tank. Any plastic YJ tank is 20 gallon. The sending units are different from the factory for 15 vs 20 gallon, but they honestly read about the same. Both of them will sit on full for a long time if used with 20 gallon capacity (75-100 miles) and then start moving down the gauge if the sender works properly. In stock form, the 15 gallon unit and plastic tank limited to 15 gallons will start reading off of full very quickly, like 10 miles after fillup.

Pull the vent tube and cut down to the 3" or whatever it needs to be, reinsert, and buy a 20 gallon sending unit.

Make sure to change the little hose connecting the fuel pump to the sending unit. Most of the aftermarket sending units come from the same cheapo manufacturer who uses an inadequate hose which eventually bursts and will leave you stranded. You want submersible high pressure fuel hose.

THANK YOU. That is seriously all I wanted to know. Can't get any answers from the shops. Off to the parts store. Thank you!

No problem. I would not consult shops for really anything pertaining to a YJ. My guess is it's due to how easy they are to work on, it seems as if shops never see them and accordingly don't know anything about them, and since all the service data is in ancient books and not as much subscriptions that shops use modernly, nobody has any reliable YJ knowledge except the people who own them.
