I'm helping a friend. With a jeep he just purchased and I'm lost. The transfer case has been changed and has an electric plug but the cable on his jeep is mechanical. We are just looking for a way to get the speedometer to work and have the gauge's at least look similar to one another.

There is no easy solution for that. That transfer case has a super short sye on it which gets rid of the speedo gear setup entirely. The easiest solution would be to replace the speedometer in the dash with a GPS model from VDO or similar. Not my favorite solution, because GPS is sort of laggy. It will not look very similar to stock.

1990 YJ, engine or main transmission named. must be 88 to 90?

wrong transfer case bought. year., he put in a way newer box. NV321-J
the question begs, can the tail shaft housed be swapped. old over new,.
GPS speedo';s work but are laggy as we all know, and why.
my 95 is electric VSS.
missing this, can be super hard to cure, lots of changes beside , this part happened.
mine is electric , vast sellers of xfr case (all) show cable 231 fits 95 and does not.
NOVAK web site names the truth here
Early 231s from 1988 through 1991 (had mech, speedo cables)_ also changed is vacuum controlled front axle.
the input splines are also , key factor on xfr case swaps, back then,. or HD version of NV231.
can 90 5 bolt rear housing fit your way newer transfer case. mech over newer electronic 231 case? IDK.
depends on what really is there, even SYE mods matter. here.
googling this is best, find others in same boat. bought wrong transfer case they did.
