Is there a gasket for the tunnel cover? RTV? When I took it off it almost looked as if asphalt was used to seal it.

None on my 91. I used silicone type sealer on mine. The putty tape for RV's would work good Id think, just cant recall what its called...Butyl tape??. It grey and in a roll about 1" wide or so. Just dont use open cell weatherstrip as it will hold water and make more rust.
I went with an after market aluminum cover and used rubber edging.
My original was also sealed with tar, very disappointing.
I expected better than that, but this was the AMF days at AMC when cardboard parts were also the order of the day.

just about destroyed mine when I pulled it off, hence the replacement.I bend a new crease into it every time I remove it!
The only thing worse would have been if they used that new gray Ford spec RTV, nasty stuff!
Had a mechanic friend working on an oil seal and ended up destroying the pan to get to it.
But the tar is still pretty nasty...
