So, noticed a check engine light. Did the key cycle test. Got code 41. Was at a gas station, so I did a quickie check for obvious stuff.
Checked fuses under hood and cable connections at alternator. Everything seemed fine. Filled up. Started Jeep.
Charge went to 14 volts on gauge. Check engine light off. Chalked it to a potential anomaly.

Drove it again a couple hours later to grab something from local parts store. Got in after coming out of store.
Started engine. Gauge went to tick mark between 9 and 14. Check engine light on again.
Perfect. I'm here, so they can check it. Put their tester on battery. Diode good. Regulator failed.
Thanked them and said I'd investigate further as I needed to figure out how it was regulated.

Of course, it's via ECM. So, before I spend $ on sending it off, are there other things to investigate?
I'm guessing there is an exciter wire. If so, what color should I be looking for? Given this thing is 33 years old, wiring can be fragile.
Anything else to check? Battery is within 2 years old (replaced after I restored the Jeep).

If I do the remote regulator, does the check engine light stay on? If so, I'm guessing there is no way to eliminate the check engine light issue from the internal regulator being bad?

Thanks!
