Hey everyone,

Does this startup sound normal to you, or is it cranking more than it should?

I’ve got a 1992 Jeep Wrangler YJ, 4.0L inline-six, manual transmission, with just over 100k miles. So far, I’ve done a coolant flush and replaced the engine valve cover gasket set. Before I start worrying about the starter or battery, I was hoping to get your input.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

I’ll be interested to see the video but without that I’m going to guess you’re fuel is running back into the tank and so the time cranking is spent pumping fuel back to the engine, which takes a few seconds.

Turn the key to On several times before cranking. The fuel pump runs about 2 sec each time. If it immediately starts after this, your fuel pump check valve is letting the fuel line drain back into the tank.

My YJ had terribly corroded battery cables. I noticed the ground strap from cylinder head to firewall was hanging on by a thread and the block ground looked terrible as well. I had already planned to go through it all to avoid chasing down gremlins after the rebuild I was planning. I ordered the Big 7 kit and as I had to replace them all, I went through and cleaned every ground under the hood. My YJ fired up immediately after that and has ever since. It's definitely worth going through the grounds and wires on these 30+ year old vehicles that are often badly neglected by previous owners.
