A little write up of doing a nsg370 swap into a 89 wrangler. This is my 2nd time putting one in a YJ was definitely more easy on a 93 then it was the 89
Jeep:
1989,4.0,ax15, atlas, dana 44,dana 60
Spring over lift.
No body lift
No skid plate drop
Installation:
Was fairly straightforward, had to pull off the shift tower and re installed it once it was in place. The floor on the right corner of the tunnel had to be pushed up about a quarter inch. I just beat it with a hammer and let the transmission do the rest of the work when jacking it up into place.
Transmission mount:
Straight swap from AX15 to NSG370, just need to get 4 metric bolts (10mm x 1.5 x 30mm) as the 4bolts from the AX15 are SAE. The plate is just a direct replacement.
I just reused the Transmission mount i already.
Transfer case:
Bolted right on with no issues. I do have a atlas tho so made it a little more easy since i didnt have to modify the shift linkage for T case.
Exhuast:
I have a TJ style Exhuast that goes up in front of the oil pan so i just left it in place. If you have the factory Exhuast you will for sure need to pull it out of the way.
Driveshafts:
No change in length so just re used my tom wood drivelines.
Cps sensor:
I bought a cps sensor for a 06 wrangler to use. And had to get the electrical plug that plugs into the 06 cps part number 5014007AB. The YJ cps is 3 wires. The 06 is also 3 wires. Its just a matter of finding the right combination until it fires up. It took me 7 different trys. Kinda a pain but not to terrible.
Clutch:
I just used a luk clutch kit for a 95 jeep wrangler. All the luk clutch kits are the same 94-06 for the 4.0. I could of got one for a 89 but i wanted a kit that came with the throw out bearing. Not the old style slave/throw out that's used in the internal slave transmissions.
Slave cylinder and master:
I bought a slave and master that was already assembled for a 95 wrangler. If you have a 90-95 it will bolt right up that’s how it went when I did one in a 93. The 89 is a little different I found out. Had to drill a new hole on the bottom of master to mount it on firewall. And then I had to drill out the clevis to 1/2 to get it to fit onto the clutch pedal. Had to use channel locks to press it on was a tight fit.
Back up lights:
When i got the transmission it already had the back up light attached to the transmissions with 2 wires. I just cut off the 89 back up light plug and used butt connectors to attach them.
Lubricant:
2 quarts of mopar Nsg370 fluid. Kinda expensive but i didnt want to risk smoking this transmission. And it had mopar fluid in it so i just put same stuff back in.
