My son & I share a passion for our YJs. Mine is a '94, his is a '91. This question involves his '91. After a drive up from CA to OR to visit me (approximately 500 miles) we noticed the backseat floorboard carpeting on the passenger side had absorbed (maybe about a half a cup) of what appears to be some sort of mechanical fluid. Neither one of us is terribly mechanical and he is taking the rig into his mechanic next week. He has checked all of his engine fluid levels which appear fine, and with the rig parked for 48 hours, there was no sign of leakage on the ground. The only sign of the same fluid on the underside of the tub was a small spattering on the cat/muffler heat shield. Could that be brake fluid leaking from the line to the rear right tire? I can't think of any other lines of fluid in that right rear quadrant of the vehicle.

I don't know how it would make it into the carpet unless the floor has open holes in it....usually fluid that hits the muffler is slung by the driveshaft and is usually transfer case oil.

Does it have a stock driveshaft?

I'm not sure re: stock driveshaft. I believe so. My son just bought the rig in April, so he is going to reach out to the previous owner to inquire if he had the same issue. When he came up to visit me, we didn't closely inspect the floor for holes but I strongly suspect there must be at least one that formerly had a bolt or a grommet in it.
