AX5 External Slave

I have a 1993 yj 2.5l manual that won’t go into gear. I got under it to look for leaks and it appears that the PO converted to an external slave. Wondering how to tell if he replaced with an AX15 or just did the conversion. Also what kit do I use to replace the master and slave? Does the one for the 1994 work?

IIRC you cannot swap a AX15 to a 4 banger. Easiest way is to Google for pics to id which trans you have.

There are adapter bell housings. You can get a whole kit from one of the adapter companies. There are also Dodge Dakotas that came equipped with the 2.5L and AX15 and if you can scrounge one up at a junkyard you can do the bell housing from that as well.

For me the quickest easiest visual distinction is the cast iron midplate on the AX5 vs the AX15. Seen in the photo below it's the dark band in the middel of the case. The AX15 does not use a cast iron midplate and looks silver vs dark.

Thanks. It looks like someone had done the internal to external conversion on my AX5. It is leaking and I need to replace. Should one of the pre-bled kits with the master and external for a 94yj or TJ work?

depends on if they did the swap with stock parts or used an aftermarket conversion kit. Most people use stock parts. Solid chance the stock replacement slave/master will work fine. Pics would help confirm.
