4.2 carburetor options (pros and cons)

PO put a Holley on my 89 YJ with 4.2 manual trans. Starts great and runs great/strong since I got it over a year ago. Also had the nutter done. Also going to add the HEI dist when I get to it. All I did was add a cool Holley air cleanter...the PO did a scab job with stock air cleaner housing...

    95 YJ 2.5 5-speed running rough

Isn't that the way it goes so often? Brand new part didn't work, and spurs ya towards replacing a bunch of other parts that were fine? Crap..well at least you solved it and can move on. With all those replacement parts in fuel and ignition systems...you are set up (hopefully) with a lot of fun...

    95 YJ 2.5 5-speed running rough

speaking of coil....I remember reading thread in the past about the notoriously wonky coil connector on the mid 90's 2.5's . And causing running issues. If you fiddle with it a little while it's running you could see if that connector is shorting. When my 89 4.2 was intermittently failing to...

    95 YJ 2.5 5-speed running rough

Dang...sorry man, you are really having to chase this around. No small projects that you've done so far (especially fuel pump). so kudos for hanging in there. Couple things...if fuel related, very possibly either injectors (dirty or failing...one could cause serious issues as you mentioned it...

    95 YJ 2.5 5-speed running rough

Yeah, and check those grounds! Again, not familiar with your config....I'm assuming fuel rail with 4 injectors, but I know some of the old 2.5 had TBI fuel systems (throttle body injector) but I'm more familiar with traditional carbs and injection systems. If it's a "traditional" throttle body...

Fuel at injector but not at spark plugs

Not familiar with your engine/fuel system...but found this pic, may help?

    Driving 50 mph

I also have 89 with 4" RE lift and 33 mudders. However, I find it pretty damn fun to drive at all speeds (to an extent, it is a lifted leaf sprung YJ afterall). All good advice..especially laying underneath while someone moves your steering wheel slowly back and forth, not enough really to move...

    95 YJ 2.5 5-speed running rough

2nd the throttle body cleaning. Sounds like you've been shooting the parts cannon pretty hard on this. But not a bad thing as many of those parts are probably past their prime anyway, right? Here are some non cannon approaches as well. MAF sensor cleaning. Not that familiar with your year and...

Should I get a hard top or a soft top?

Agreed...had both also. My father inlaw bought a tj like 7 years ago with hard top and doors. Right away bought bikini top, etc. For summer fun. Never once had top off. He'd like to, but just too much hassle for him to bother.

Should I get a hard top or a soft top?

Both Any hard top is cumbersome compared to YJ rag. Of course Jeep streamlined the soft top design and mechanisms on subsequent generations. YJ was 1st wrangler after all. But I'm amazed how stout, functional, flexible, and watertight it is when properly deployed.

Should I get a hard top or a soft top?

Mine was homemade...but they sell them. 2 holes in drywall either side of ceiling joist, 1/2" rope up and over joist, 3" block pulley at ceiling, cleat on wall. Back in, unbolt top. Run a couple webbing straps under top and hook to rope that's sized for pulley (bigger is better)...haul to...

Should I get a hard top or a soft top?

Ive had both, and store in garage with top off during summer. After a few times, soft top not too bad to take down and put up. Much faster than hard top hassle (had garage ceiling hoist for that jeep). Using half doors, and go doorless in summer too. Live in Oregon. Soft top louder, but liveable...

How do you unplug the idiot light panel on dashboard?

Oh, and clean the copper printed bulb contacts too on back of panel as they get corrosion (same with gauge cluster that caused non working temp and fuel gauges for me).

How do you unplug the idiot light panel on dashboard?

Tough side is left side. Once left plug off, you can rotate over column and upside down making right side easy to access. No clips. Mine were stuck pretty good too on 1989. Pry on left and right side with flat blade screwdriver to get started. Or long handled angled needlenose is what I did as...

89 YJ: help with engine temp gauge issue

Cleaned gauge and ribbon contacts as suggested. Not only does my temp gauge now work perfectly...but I now have a gas gauge for the first time since I bought the YJ! Thought I was going to have to pull tank and replace the guts. So happy to report this issue solved! Thank you, thank you! I...

89 YJ: help with engine temp gauge issue

Thanks Dorf! I have new bulbs coming for instrument cluster, so I'll be pulling cluster again (recently pulled to replace faulty oil pressure gauge) and will clean and test as you suggest! Hopefully gauge is still functional, otherwise will replace.

89 YJ: help with engine temp gauge issue

Hello! Here are symptoms: Engine temp gauge stays at 100 degrees (bottom) regardless of coolant temp. Here is what I've found so far. If I ground the coolant temp sending unit wire, and turn key, gauge doesn't peg as it does on videos I've found on youtube on diagnosing issues with temp...

How much should I ask for a 90 YJ with a blown engine?

Will be interesting to seeing other's replies, by the more experienced jeepers. I know many people put the 4.0 engines in earlier yj's. Would be an upgrade. I'm sure there would be plenty of added bits to round up. If you search "jeep yj 4.2 to 4.0 engine swap" on youtube, you'll have no...

How much should I ask for a 90 YJ with a blown engine?

Exactly right! Have a tech diagnose and give you an estimate. Even if you decide to just dump instead getting fixed for sale (or fun)...you can make informed decision on how much to discount, and even show potential buyer diagnosis and repair costs, so they dont feel like they are taking risk by...
