199 YJ 6 4.0 died (sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't)

UPDATE: (RESOLVED) I wanted to put this out here to help maybe anybody that might be having intermittent and hard to figure out Jeep issues. I waited a couple weeks to make sure I found the problem and it appears I most definitely did. I was still having problems with the jeep sometimes...

199 YJ 6 4.0 died (sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't)

Thank you for your response. I actually like autozone as well. However, this having an automatic transmission and using a different CPS than the manuals they didn't have one. O'Reilly's didn't either. Autozone said they couldn't get it and O'Reilly's could order it but told me they would just...

199 YJ 6 4.0 died (sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't)

UPDATE: Still having issues, but might have some more info. I have a new IAC valve and yet another new TPS since the last new one I put on threw a code. I am going to take the throttle body off this weekend and clean it really good and replace both the IAC valve and TPS why I have it off...

199 YJ 6 4.0 died (sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't)

UPDATE: And the saga continues.......... Remember, I replaced the TPS yesterday.. I started the jeep like 4 times today and it fired right up. Even let it run about 10 minutes. Idled great, no issues. This evening I thought I'd try it again and it wouldn't start after about 3 tries. Also noticed...

That's really good information on the harness kits. Thanks for sharing.

199 YJ 6 4.0 died (sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't)

Were you able to buy all these harnesses in a kit or did you have to buy them all separately? Where did order or purchase them from? I have a few that probably would be better being replaced. Thanks

199 YJ 6 4.0 died (sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't)

UPDATE: Likely still not fixed, but I was getting odd readings on the TPS when I test it. Range is suppose to be .2V - below 5 volts. I first read 5 volts right off with throttle closed and that's the low end. Way to high and means it's bad! However, I think maybe I did not have a good...

199 YJ 6 4.0 died (sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't)

Thanks for the response. That has crossed my mind. Did your check engine light come on and then go off as normal when you started your jeep? I understand that's one sign your computer is bad if that stops working Mine comes on normal and I can check it for codes, but not getting anything outside...

199 YJ 6 4.0 died (sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't)

Yes, I replaced the fuel filter after the new fuel pump was installed. I can't remember exactly when, but it was after that when I started having some problems and thought that might be the culprit. I'm guessing it's been maybe 2000 miles or less, so hopefully it's still okay. Thanks for your...

199 YJ 6 4.0 died (sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't)

Hey all. I've been dealing with this issue quite sometime now. I'll start from the beginning, because it could have been the culprit all along. I bought the Jeep around 4 years ago. Didn't drive it much, but never had any starting or dying issues. Started good, ran good. I had it probably 6...

91 Jeep YJ - Cranks but No start - Have spark and have fuel at fuel rail

Update: In another forum, had a member suggest I do this..... Try unplugging your coolant temp sensor and see if it starts. On these older vehicles when they go the computer reads -40 and it flood the engine when trying to cold start. I unplugged the coolant temp sensor and it started. Might...

91 Jeep YJ - Cranks but No start - Have spark and have fuel at fuel rail

I'll do that. Certainly wouldn't hurt anything, and would be worth a quick inspection. Especially if I found cracks. Thanks

91 Jeep YJ - Cranks but No start - Have spark and have fuel at fuel rail

Thanks for the info. I sent the computer off a couple years ago or so and they tested it and didn't find anything wrong. I can't remember what problem ended up being but seemed like same issue as I'm having now. I have expected timing issues with this jeep for about that long. I get voltage...

91 Jeep YJ - Cranks but No start - Have spark and have fuel at fuel rail

Thanks for the info. I can't rule this out. Something is going on for sure. The engine doesn't seem to be unusually loud to me. Over fueling the engine does make sense. Any other way I would be able to tell?

91 Jeep YJ - Cranks but No start - Have spark and have fuel at fuel rail

Back again. Same problem as before. Posting new article below. This thing is driving me crazy. 1991 Jeep Wrangler YJ 6 cyl 4.0L HO, fuel injected – Automatic Transmission 166,000 miles – (Has new crate motor with only 11,000 miles or so on it) Anybody that can help me with this issue, it...

91 Jeep YJ - Cranks but No start - Have spark and have fuel at fuel rail

Jeep has 166,000 miles on it but has a new crate motor with about 10,000 miles on it. However motor was in when I bought the Jeep a couple years ago. I have not looked at the timing chain and have wondered about it. Only set camshaft to tdc and verified rotor was pointing toward #1 plug. Could...

91 Jeep YJ - Cranks but No start - Have spark and have fuel at fuel rail

Reading your post again after I set to tdc on compression stroke and verified trailing end of rotor blade was pointing just past the #1 plug as specified in manual and got the jeep to start again. One thing I did happen to notice was the bolt holding down the distributor wasn’t very tight...

91 Jeep YJ - Cranks but No start - Have spark and have fuel at fuel rail

Yes. After setting compression stroke to tdc it fired up! A couple starts after that it was a bit slow to start and actually had to give it a little gas one time and it backfired but started. Has started ever since so timing must have jumped somehow. Wish I knew what’s causing it. It is starting...

91 Jeep YJ - Cranks but No start - Have spark and have fuel at fuel rail

Just found this and sounds like the same problem I'm having. This guy seems to have way more patience than I do, but finally found the problem. Has be thinking problem could definitely be with the distributor or my rotor alignment has just been knocked off after setting compression stroke #1 at...
