    Old School 4.3 Drivetrain Swap

Been doing a bunch of little, non-Jeep specific stuff to the build, but here's a couple pics to keep things going... Test fit of the lower crossover tube. Yes, the welds are big and ugly. After welding the seams, I washed them with a second pass. Don't have a nice, neat TIG, and don't like...

What would be the cheapest way to match front and rear axle gear ratios?

I'm seeing regear/rebuild kits for the Dana 30 for about $200 on ebay. I'd look at regearing the front to match the rear.

Engine keeps running for about 3 seconds after turning ignition off, then it is hard to crank

I did some searching, and this is something that YJs occasionally do. No one had a solution, but the possibilities mentioned were something sticking in the steering column, ERG valve or EGR sensor, and the ASD (automatic shut down) relay. Since you've replaced the relay itself, looking at the...

YJ engine temp / oil pressure connectors

Well, it turns out that the terminal in the temp sender is sized and positioned like one half of a regular quarter inch spade connector, and the housing fits the insulated female spade connector just about perfectly... As for the oil sender, it's round terminal is a good fit for a female...

YJ engine temp / oil pressure connectors

Thanks! They had the oil connector, but not the temp gauge connector. And man are they proud of the one they have! I found them for anywhere from $35 to $58. I think I might just go visit a wrecking yard...

YJ engine temp / oil pressure connectors

Has anyone had any luck finding connectors for the gauge senders (fuel injected)? No one seems to have these... Temp (gauge) sender: And oil pressure sender:

Engine keeps running for about 3 seconds after turning ignition off, then it is hard to crank

First place I'd look is your automatic shut down relay in the power distribution box. It sounds like it might be stuck on. As Flyer58 said, that would mean the rig would run until you lost fuel pressure.

    Old School 4.3 Drivetrain Swap

By the way, no one ever budgets enough for this little stuff. I'm building this rig to be reliable and last another 10 years, so I'm trying not to mickey mouse anything. I snagged the cooler itself from a u pull it yard over a year ago, so I'm not counting that, but I'll still be into the tranny...

    Old School 4.3 Drivetrain Swap

Transmission cooling: two 6' lengths of 5/16" brake line ran down the right frame rail. I've got the fittings ordered to get 5/16" barbs on each end. The transition from hard to soft line up front will happen just under the mini-crossmember where the front brake line runs, so it will be...

Loud metallic clanking noise on 95 YJ

In addition to everything others have mentioned, wiggle your tail pipe. They like to come loose and bang against the rear spring, and it can sound like it's coming from further forward on the rig. Mine only did it when I was turning left. Also, check all your shock mounts, and the track bar...

    Old School 4.3 Drivetrain Swap

The last few days have been all about linkages. I've just about got the T-case, tranny and throttle linkages dialed in. Fittings are ordered for power steering and the fuel line adaptors. Need to figure out what I'm going to need to get flex line from push-lock fittings to -6 AN for the fuel...

    Old School 4.3 Drivetrain Swap

Figuring out the wiring. The Painless wiring harness I'm working with is really nice. The proof will be when the thing runs, but at this point I can't recommend them enough. Merging the three systems (GM, Painless and Jeep) has been fairly easy, and helped a lot by the fact that a lot of the...

    SOLD YJ 4.0 ECM

This is my spare ECM from a 93 yj that I bought for parts. It was running (had a bad rear end). I'm swapping engines in my yj so I'm ready to sell it. I did the Capacitor replace on both my ECMs... this is the one that was not featured in the video (see my signature). The cap replace was...

    Old School 4.3 Drivetrain Swap

I'm still working, but hitting it hard evenings and weekends. I'd wanted to get this done last winter, but Work just went nuts and I ended up traveling a lot. Now the weather's turned, and it was either dive in and get it done or wait till next fall. I opted to go ahead, but this thing is my...

Can't find the fuse for the factory fog lights (1995 Sahara)

The fog lights (relay contact side) are protected by Fuse 3 in the power distribution box under the hood, and by fuse 6 in the panel under the dash. The coil side is fed by the headlight switch (black wire w/ yellow stripe). There are two fog light relays because the headlight dimmer switch is...

    When to replace certain parts?

For a rig that age, if you're going to do the water pump you'll be almost halfway to the timing chain. It's a bigger job, but I'd do it. Not only is it good insurance against the old chain breaking and stranding you, but the wear on a timing chain degrades your engine's performance by sending...

    Old School 4.3 Drivetrain Swap

The motor's in, and sitting on its own three feet. Using the temporary crossmember in the rear really helped a lot. I mounted it on allthread, so I could raise and lower the transmission to set the overall height and match the pinion angle. I'll probably leave this in until the rig gets back...

    Old School 4.3 Drivetrain Swap

The separate corssmember was a cool idea, but when I got in and started measuring, there were too many clearance problems. Front driveline, exhaust, brake and fuel lines.... all solvable, but I need to keep this project on track or I'm going to be at it all summer. I've lived with the...

    Old School 4.3 Drivetrain Swap

Rumors about the yj steering columns being a Chevy S10 column from the same era are true. I need a park/neutral switch for the GM fuel injection, and the Jeep has nothing like that. I also need to do something for a backup light switch, which on the Jeep was on the transmission, but the GM...
