So, I posted this is another platform and I have received no responses, so I'm here checking on this forum.

1995 Wrangler YJ Sahara 4.0L auto trans. Forgive me, but I am new to the Jeep family. My brother who convinced me to buy this Jeep has passed and now I don't have that source of knowledge any longer. My issue: when I shift into reverse, the jeep begins backing up fine for about 5-10 seconds and then the idle gets a little wonky and it acts as if it wants to shut down. Sometimes it will shut down. If I stop and immediately shift it to drive it will shut down. It runs fine and idles fine. It just has this reverse issue.

Below is what I have done so far since I purchased this Jeep several months ago:
Changed transmission fluid and filter / oil and filter / new plugs and wires / new coolant system hoses and fluid / new thermostat / new coolant temp sensor and sender / changed diff fluid and seals front and rear / new TPS / new CPS / new manifold air temp sensor / new O2 sensor / new MAP sensor / new idle speed motor / replaced some of the vacuum connections that were questionable

There are a few other changes I've made, but these are the more mechanical/engine related ones. PLEASE HELP!!! THANKS!!

It may not be the safest option, what if you jacked up the back of the jeep so the rear wheels are off the ground and tried reverse.

Could the rear brakes or drive train be locking up when going backwards?

I don't know anything about the automatic trans, just thinking what else is further down the line.

Another shot in the dark. Unplug the reverse light switch on the transmission to see if it's effecting the fuel pump.

Maybe check or watch fuel pressure when you put it in reverse.

My auto trans acted very similar to this when going from 1 to 2 and after trying to chase down the issue for a year, it turned out to need a rebuilt transmission

You could also see if the throttle valve/“kick down” cable is properly adjusted ——— may not be relevant with the reverse issue, but easy to do.

See this video:

Now you may be on to something here. I'll try that and post an update once completed.

I sure hope not. It does fine in all the other gears, and it does fine starting out in reverse. It just dies out after several minutes of moving in reverse and can sometimes hit a high idle while in reverse. I hope it a fuel related issue. It just doesn't feel like trans related, but I'm obviously not expert. thanks
