I was just crawling around underneath checking things out and realized I have no fuel filter in line. I traced everything. Where it should be, over the tire, it just runs straight. ‘89 2.5. Is it possible they put one of the newer pita all in one fuel pumps with the strainer bags in? I didn’t think they were compatible with the old metal tanks.

Sure looks like someone put a short length of hard tube where the filer should be. I don't know about the fuel pump fitting your tank.

I have a 92 but thought all YJ's had a poly tank with steel skid cover.

I believe they still used metal tanks up until 1990. Then switched over. I know TJ’s and newer no longer use in line, everything is in the tank. So am I to assume with a modern made replacement pump you no longer need a filter? That’s something I’ve never read about anywhere.

Mine is there. Yours looks like it was removed and altered

What’s the opinion of whether or not I should put one back in? It’s just figuring out the best way to mount it without the plate that should be there. Obviously doable though. I was thinking of foam pipe insulation around it as a protectant. I’m still not finding any answers as to why it would have been removed yet.
