YJ Lighting and Audio

I’m working on tidying up the electronics and audio on my YJ and could use some input:

1. Fog Lights – Worth Keeping?
My current bumper has square fog lights (capped off) that came with the setup — pretty aggressive aftermarket bumper that I’m replacing with an OEM one.

• Any real benefit to keeping fogs?
• How often do you actually use yours?
• Are they more hassle than they’re worth?

2. Driver Side Dash Wiring – Cover or Clean-Up Tips?
Under the driver side dash, I’ve got exposed wiring.
Is there a factory-style cover that hides this area?
Or has anyone come up with a clean DIY solution to keep that area looking tidy?

3. Sounds – Simplifying the System
I think only one speaker works right now. I’m thinking of removing the dead door speakers, swapping in clean non-speaker liners, and installing a new head unit — probably something retro to match the Jeep’s vibe.

Also planning to install a sound bar up top — seems like a must-have at this point. But I’ve got no idea what to do with the dash speakers to actually improve sound quality.

Has anyone swapped them out with something better? Any fitment issues or sound tips?


And for bass — I’d love to add some weatherproof, hidden, or low-profile subwoofers, but have no clue where to stash them without killing space or the look. Open to ideas.

Anything else from an electronics standpoint to look out for? Any tips?

#1 - can't help. Never had them
#2 - no cover, but the wiring shouldn't all be hanging down
#3 - Door speakers? Someone cut up your panels and added those? Or do you mean in the dash by the doors?

For audio, lots of good options. If you want to keep it pretty stock looking like it sounds, then I can share my setup which I think sounds great. I'm running an Alpine 9886 head unit with 400BT module. No amp. Head unit is driving Polk 4x6 plate speakers in the stock dash spots and driving two infinity 6.5s in the sound bar. For base, I have a self powered Rockville slim 8" sub that fits completely under the rear seat.

1. If you like the look of the fog lights leave them on. I do but never use them. Separate topic, but the stock headlights are quite dim and I run mine in high beam 100% of the time. With all the new cars having blinding led’s no one ever notices or cares.

2. Use zip ties to tuck up and secure any hanging wires.

I’ve heard great things about those speakers. Did you have to modify them to make them fit in the dash?
