it's a 92 yj with the autmatic transmission, when i go to engage 4x4 i put it in neutral go into 4 high then neutral and when i go to try 4 low it makes a grinding noise but it does engage and work. it's just when i put it and take it off 4 low.

make sure the transfer case fluid is clean and full. You can shift to four high while moving, but in my experience you need to stop fully, put the auto trans in neutral and then shift to four low. These do not shift extremely smooth.
