Deleting the spare tire carrier

Has anyone deleted the spare tire carrier from the tailgate? By deleting I mean removing and welding up (and finishing) the mounting holes for the bracket and four rubber bumpers. Just wondering if I should go that route or just take it off and repainting it leaving the mounting holes.

I took mine off my 91 for a while and shoved the spare under a platform. Got sick of the rattling tailgate. That lasted a few months until the loss of room sucked worst. Now Im running a Dirtworx carrier/bumper setup. Id think you'll eventually not be happy to lose the spare out back.
