How to retain 4WD light with passenger solid axle shaft upgrade

I have an ‘88 YJ. My 4WD CAD and light didn’t work when I brought it home 4 yrs ago, among a lot of problems that weren’t addressed. I found that the primary vacuum source line off the engine was connected to a dead vacuum port. So I hooked it to a primary manifold vacuum port, and all works...

What did you name your YJ and how did you decide on it?

    Tortuga blanca. For obvious reasons.

    Starting issue

You mentioned you have a TBI. Wouldn’t happen to be Howell? I have a 4.2L with Howell. I get a similar condition every so often, 1 in 20 starts perhaps. After 5 seconds of grinding and no-start, I floor the pedal (while still cranking) and it starts within another 5 seconds reliably. The Howell...

    Oil Pressure & Overfilling?

If your oil pressure gauge is erratic, put in a new sender unit, they're cheap. The replacement ones have new technology over the original ones, mine now works great.

Advice and help! On shocks and interior courtesy lights etc

I also have Ranchos, not sure which model, but they have 5 selectable adjustments. The ride became significantly better when I removed both the front and rear tracking bars, I believe they were binding the shackles not allowing proper movement of the leaf springs. Handling on the freeway and...

    Radiator overflow

I used duct tape, been on there 4 years now, it's seen temps from the teens to 100+°F.

Wangler YJ 4.2 to 4.0 swap

I have an '88 with the Howell TBI, been my daily driver and fun off-road vehicle for nearly 4 years. I love the Howell, simple and reliable. I pass California smog every time, the guy always tells me it's because of the Howell.

YJ runs fine for 10-20 miles, then hesitates, sputters, and stalls

Have no idea if this is related, but I'll throw it out there. I was having extreme trouble filling with gas at the gas station, had to fill super slow out it was tripping the automatic gas pump shut-off. Turned out to be the emissions evaporator canister was clogged which didn't allow venting of...

YJ runs fine for 10-20 miles, then hesitates, sputters, and stalls

Here's something that happened to me although it didn't shut down the engine. My charcoal canister (emissions) was restricting the vapor return line from the gas tank such that I could fill the gas tank at a normal speed, only super slow. Mine is a 1988 with a 20 gal plastic tank. You might try...

YJ runs fine for 10-20 miles, then hesitates, sputters, and stalls

Pull the plugs and examine, perhaps a head gasket or valves problem. Might do a compression check with engine warm.

Slow gas filling problem on 88 YJ

In the interest of helping others, I discovered my slow gas fill problem. On a hunch, I disconnected the vent line from the gas tank to the charcoal canister (at the canister), then proceeded to fill the tank. I was able to fill it at ALL SPEEDS with no shutting off of the nozzle at any time...

Slow gas filling problem on 88 YJ

Mine's definitely 20 gallon, I've put in 18+ gallons a few times. Haven't tapped on the tank to verify plastic or metal. The vent hose length isn't probably the issue since it slow fills when it's near empty all the way up.

Slow gas filling problem on 88 YJ

Thanks all for the suggestions. Upon closer attention it appears to be a fill problem - which I attributed to a venting problem. I just fill it carefully at a slow rate and it works. When/if I have another tank problem, I'll pull the tank to get a better look. Or I'll try to snake the lines - my...

Slow gas filling problem on 88 YJ

This is apparently a common problem with the YJ's. I have the 20 gal tank. I've found if I insert the nozzle so that the tail end of the handle is at 3 o'clock, it fills the best, but still very slow -- not nearly as fast as the first automatic hold notch on most all pumps. I have no leaks. Do I...
