I got a new boot rubber boot for above the shifter lock cup thingy, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to pop the upper shifter off the lower shifter. 4 little tabs holding a square shaft. Specialty tool?
...bigger hammer?

Find a way to clamp the shifter base, in a vise or similar. Slip a crescent wrench under the black portion, hammer on the head of the wrench. It’ll come off. Don’t do what you’re doing with the screwdriver, that could screw up the pressure fit that keeps it together. Need that intact so it doesn’t come apart on you while driving down the road.

Take care when securing the base in the vise. If you aren’t careful, clamping down on it could booger up the slots that the locating pins ride in. So clamp on the smooth round part, and use some sort of cloth too.

Copy that!
Clamp in vise "just so"
Slide 13/16 wrench under it, and WHACK it a few wood tomes with a 2lb drillin' hammer.

THANKS FOR THE ASSIST!!!

Boom, there ya go.

There's also a rubber sleeve, called a shift lever isolator seal. It's inside the retaining clip that's holding this together. You might be able to save it. If not you'll need to get a new one. The sleeve makes it a tight slip-fit inside. Without the sleeve back in, it'll be a tad sloppy when back together.

You can find the isolator sleeve on Amazon for like $9

That’s on the transfer case shifter. Transmission doesn’t have that, it’s just an interference fit.
