Engine starts easy but runs rough.

I have a 1989 YJ with a 4.2L engine. In the early morning , it starts easy and the RPM's come up right away. But after a minute, it idles so rough, it sounds like it is firing on only 4 cylinders. After it gets up to temp. (approx. 170-180), it runs fairly decent, starting out, and fine at...

    EXHAUST ISSUE

Does anyone know why my engine / exhaust is “spitting out” black water and smoke, and sticking on my driveway? It starts easy (89 yj), then runs rough until at 180 degrees, then runs great. But when stopping and restarting it starts hard! I am running 3.5 psi on fuel, and 11 degrees BTDC! HELP!!

Is the problem related to fuel flow?

I finally set the timing correctly on my 89 Wrangler 4.2L engine. It is an ATK rebuilt, with Clifford Performance intake/Weber carb/ and split headers. I milled the heads 0.60 , and added a Howard cam. I am also running MSD ignition. Now that it is timed, and runs great, the only issue I have...

    Timing

I am having an issue with starting my 4.2l It will turn over, then hesitate, then run. I just “milled”the head .0060, and installed a Howard cam. It has more compression, and that may contribute to the hesitation, But i think it is more timing that anything else. HELP!!

AX15 Bellhousing hydraulic line isolator/dust cover

Aligning 4.2L engine to motor mounts

I just connected the 4.2L engine in my 1989 YJ to my AX15 transmission, and when lowering it onto the front mounts the new bushings won't align with the mount holes. The bushings are approximately 3/4 inch back (toward the firewall) from the mounts. I am not sure what the problem is, and need...

Engine install in my 89 YJ

I am having a helluva time re-installing my 4.2L engine to my AX 15 transmission. I have changed every angle on both the engine and transmission, and can't get the splines to line up, The transmission is in neutral, and I double checked the pilot bearing to make sure it fit. Since it...

Converting the AX15 internal slave cylinder to external

Every person I have talked to about the internal to external slave cylinder conversion says it is well worth it. I bought the NOVAk conversion. My issue right now is that their installation instructions are geared to removing the transmission. I just finished a rebuild of my 4.2L engine, and...

    AX15 Bellhousing isolator

I recently removed the Peugeot transmission and bought an (used) AX15 to replace it. The transmission is in very good condition for it's age, but is missing the bellhousing "Rubber" isolator grommet that protects the hydraulic lines exiting from the internal slave cylinder. Would anyone know...

    Throwout bearing replacement

I have been watching videos on you tube about replacing the throw out bearing on an 89 YJ with an AX15 transmission. The videos always show the replacement being done by removing the transmission/transfer case drive shafts, skid plate, shifter, etc. And, during the videos, the mechanic's...

    4.2l timing

I have a 1989 Wrangler 4.2L. I just installed a Howard cam and a rebuilt 4.2L head that I had milled 60 thousands. Everything went back together as specified in my Jeep manual. My problem is this: I can't get it timed I put the #1` cylinder at TDC. The distributor pointed to the #1 cylinder...

Install new cam and mill the heads.

I need some advice on my 89 4.2L engine. I am getting ready to install a Clifford Performance Camshaft, new valves, springs, etc. , and mill the head .60 over. My question is, " Will it be easier to pull the engine and replace the cam, do the head work, etc., do the change with the engine...
