For me the quickest easiest visual distinction is the cast iron midplate on the AX5 vs the AX15. Seen in the photo below it's the dark band in the middel of the case. The AX15 does not use a cast iron midplate and looks silver vs dark.

There are adapter bell housings. You can get a whole kit from one of the adapter companies. There are also Dodge Dakotas that came equipped with the 2.5L and AX15 and if you can scrounge one up at a junkyard you can do the bell housing from that as well.

Did you leave the soft top frame on the Jeep or remove it? I usually start by throwing the top over the frame then starting at the front windshield channel I get that in place then the rear corners, spreader bar snaps, then the windows, after everything is in place I push the spreaderbar up.
