How much should I pay to get track bars removed?

I'm not allowed to work on my Jeep at my apartment building so I was thinking of hitting up a nearby mechanic to take the Track Bars off my '92 YJ.

That should be a quick and relatively cheap job, yeah? Any ballpark what I should expect to pay? $100-200?

BTW, if anyone in the West Los Angeles area has the space and the tools, happy to pay you.

My YJ runs a little stiff/hard and from what I've read removing the Track Bars could soften everything up. Speed bumps give me cold sweats.

You could go to harbor freight, buy a wrench and a socket set. You could remove them yourself in 15 minutes in the store parking lot and then return the tools. I wouldn’t pay anyone a cent to do this for you.

Maybe I’ll give it a shot. Thing is, they look like they’ve been attached for 30 years. Doubt it’s going to be that easy. At all.

Spray pb blaster on the bolts the night before and they should come off pretty easily.

If you happen to get your tub off, this is how I removed the rear frame mount. The axle mount came off during rebuild.

I would NOT... repeat NOT recommend removal of ANY front suspension components!!!

The "stiffness" your referring to is most likely the inherent YJ experience. Flat factory springs or 3" or higher lift springs are most likely your culprits.

I put O.M.E. 2.5 springs on my 88 a decade or so ago, and only looking to replace them for vanity! Super nice on, and decent enough for medium off road. I love them.

I wouldn’t blame any stiffness on just the track bars. What’s the rest of your steering and suspension look like? You may remove your track bars then find out your sway bar bushing are shot and then you may get into a scary situation. I have removed my track bars but I also have made sure my steering and suspension was ready for what the track bar may be hiding. Also mine were never removed and I did need a breaker bar to assist in removal. If you weigh in the price of new tools and time for doing it yourself then may be better off paying a mechanic or one of your buddies with a six pack.

So crazy question. If the track bars ARE removed, what is the likelihood of increasing the chance of enabling death wobble?

The track bar is designed to keep the axels aligned. The death wobble is not as likely on the leaf spring vehicle without track bars. However if your sway bars and steering linkage are busted you may be in for a fun ride.

Good times. Thanks

Not really any chance of inducing death wobble from ditching the track bars. Only death wobble I ever had was when I had bad ball joints and leaf spring bushings (Rough Country garbage). Once I fixed that I was good to go and never had an issue again, on many hard bumps.

my rear track bar was off when I got the Jeep, I took the sway bar off, no probs, then one day coming home from wheeling the Jeep was wondering a bit on straight roads so I pulled over and the front Track bar had taken itself off, the bushing had just gotten so worn that the top end of the bar came off, fixed it back up that day and no more wondering, been driving it daily for years

The mount on my axle came pre snapped. They tried to JB weld it back together but obviously that didn't work. Was one bolt on the frame mount and took 5 minutes to remove + another 30-45 to grind the old mounts off, sand and re spray.

Like others said, you could do it in the Napa parking lot and doubt anyone would even notice.

On YJs especially if you happen to street drive it a lot, I recommend keeping the front track bar. It does help with wandering and steering feel on the street.
