Air filter housing spare inlet?

On my seemingly endless mission to cure my backfire I was checking the airflow to the TBI from the air filter housing and spotted this pipe heading off under the fan housing and pointing at the engine but not connected. Is it an extra air intake? Is it supposed to suck more cold air into the filter as well as the proper one behind the grill? I've got the main inlet tube connected to the TBI and another one underneath connected to the engine block but this one seems to be a spare? Thanks again everyone!

I'm gonna take a stab at this one for you although I'm not familiar with the TBI systems. Older vehicles,mostly carbed, ran a hot air intake system into the air inlet which typically was under the snorkel of the air cleaner. There was a vacuum motor in there that when cold closed the fresh cold air intake and opened a path that drew heated air of the exhaust manifold to create a faster warm up thus less smog from the cold running rich. Id bet that black tube you see is hooked up to the exhaust manifold. or should have been. Personally Id try to hook it back up if im correct.

Never got back to you! You were right, it was hooked up to the exhaust manifold and it did make a difference to the start up times. There is another open hole on the connector to the front grill that points back into the engine bay. No clue what that's for though haha. More Tubes than Fee Waybill.
