Hi
I have an 88 YJ 4.2 5 speed. I either have to rebuild the 4.2 /carb. or replace it with a 4.0 /EFI, any thoughts for one or the other.

Thanks
Ralph

I'd much rather have the 4.0L, or fuel inject the 4.2. Unfortunately the cool Mopar fuel injection packages for the 4.2L are pretty much gone. Those would be the best, more powerful than the 4.0 slightly all said and done. I wouldn't want to keep the carb 4.2L in this day and age.

Thank you for the feedback. I was just looking around and found a used 4.2 with the Mopar fuel injection package on it. They said it was running when they took it out, The want $750 for it. I would rebuild it anyway. However, they also have a carb. 4.2 for $250. I am wondering do I buy the one for $250 rebuild it and refit it for fuel injection or do I take the chance with the one for $750? Your thoughts?

The problem with fitting it with fuel injection is the options aren’t that great now, Howell is alright, but I’d rather the factory Mopar kit. I’d probably take my chance on the $750.

I have an '88 with the Howell TBI, been my daily driver and fun off-road vehicle for nearly 4 years. I love the Howell, simple and reliable. I pass California smog every time, the guy always tells me it's because of the Howell.
