I have an 88 YJ with BA10/5 and 231 AMC. I plan on correcting the vacuum disconnect on the front axle in the near future. But have other things that need addressed first. I have the 231 on the bench now to inspect. I under stand that the AMC versions have a different internal rooster comb than the later 231 J models. Does anyone know if I can swap in the later rooster comb? That should give me a true neutral position which the AMC models do not.

Thanks

Yes, the YJ does not have a true neutral. Anything from a TJ and onward does, because the TJ deleted the CAD so it needed to differentiate at the tcase when flat towing. YJ Has the CAD so it doesn't need true neutral in stock form, but once you either add a front licker or delete the CAD, you need it if you're gonna flat tow. You can buy it for about $50. I got it on Amazon 2 years ago but now they're unavailable, but looks like you can order it elsewhere.

A really good idea while you're in there is to replace the range fork with this newer upgraded model. Being a 1989 you probably have the steel one which really does not work well especially after all these years.
