Gas Fumes

Filled the tank last night and this morning the garage has serious gas fumes. When i bought the jeep a few days ago it had 1/2 a tank and no fumes. So I’m thinking that there is a bad cap or there must be a vent line of some sort. Reading indicated a vent line to a filter and it seem that it’s common to go bad. Trying to read about how to get to the line and check as well as the location of the charcoal filter. Do I have to drop the tank to access the lines, etc. Any advice or direction would be appreciated. 1993 YJ with a 4.0 engine.

Well, more research indicates I need to drop the tank. There are a number of plastic fitting on top of the tank that crack, along with the rubber line. The only way is to drop the tank. Been watching videos on that and looks pretty doable. I’ll have to either siphon out the current gas or just drive it. I think the issue is only when the tank is full. I’m also thinking that while the tank is out, I’ll put in a new fuel pump. No idea if it’s the original or not but i don’t want to have to do this again. Thoughts?

Tank vent replacement is a pretty easy job. OEM fuel pumps are no longer available. I got one from autozone which has held up for a year so far. Also replace the fuel pump gasket, fill tube, vent tube, fuel line, and fuel filter while you are at it. If your tank is only filling up to 15 gallons currently, this is also the perfect time to do the 20 gallon hack/mod (search for it on YouTube). Good luck!

Thanks! Tried siphoning some gas out to get farther below the vents but couldnt’ get a hose down the fill pipe. I’ll just run it down then drop the tank. Btw, my tank is 20 gallons. I put in just over18g last night. Seems the 4.0 engines have the larger tank than the 2.5’s. I did read about the hack.. and yeah, good advice on replacing a number of things while I’m tackling this.
