I'm looking to upgrade the stock shackles to a 1.25" boomerang. I am wanting to slowly upgrade my stock yj. Improvements in ride smoothness are top priority as it is a daily driver. I have a couple of questions/concerns;

Will I need to upgrade anything else going from stock to 1.25" boomerang shackle?

Should I be upgrading to a greaseable shackle?

Is this worth doing, or should I start with new leafs and shocks?

I appreciate you comments. I like doing the work myself but don't know what I do not know.

Thanks

start with a 1-1.25” body lift. Shackle lifts suck. 0.5” shackle lift is relatively ok but any shackle lift will be felt drastically in the steering. A 1.25” shackle lift will yield really poor handling. They also look like buck teeth.

Generally speaking, yes.
But I believe I read that OME boomerang shackles are about 5" in length. I imagine they would drive fine.
Don't you think?
I'm too cheap to find out. I'm running 5.25" Ebay specials. They're ok.

It’s been a while since I measured my OMEs but they are around 4.25” off the top of my head, so like 1/8” lift. I will say I don’t notice anything from those. I did have some 3/8” lift shackles from MORE and 1/2” lift from RE (so 4.75” and 5” respectively) and I did not care for either. Both made the steering on mine feel pretty loose.

I was mostly trying to advise against the 1.25” lift boomerangs the OP mentioned which would be a 6.50” shackle. Those will for sure handle poorly. Although I guess that is in the eye of the beholder. The good news I suppose is shackles are cheap and easy to change either way so it’s not like you’re missing a ton of money or out a bunch of labor if you put some on you don’t like. Can always easily revert back.

If you are looking for an improvement in ride quality start with the basics.

  • Shocks
  • Tire pressures
  • Load rating of the tires (start with load rating C)
  • Amount of sidewall on the tire
