Planning to buy a 1987 YJ tomorrow to be my weekend driver. I commute in a company truck, so I drive very few miles and this Jeep is clean. It has 178k miles and has been fully restored by the previous owner. No leaks, no rust, new aftermarket carb, new interior, new steering wheel, new lock box console, new battery, new AC, new power steering box, new starter and a new 2” lift and tires. I wanted to come here and ask, before I buy it, if any of you might have any concerns about me buying this and using it to get around town on the weekends and take the occasional trip to the beach (1.5 hours away). I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it, so I’m trying to use my head and not think with my heart!! Lol

Fire away!

Sounds sweet and light years better than the one I found and did a total drive train redo and use for a daily driver.........
I'd get it and never look back.................

Yep, its hard to think with your head and not think with your heart with these YJ's. Once you have one, you're hooked. My YJ is not my primary vehicle either. I pretty much use mine as a weekend driver too (I'm about 45 minutes from the beach). But I enjoy driving it so much, I'm always looking for other excuses to drive it during the week on errands and such.

As far as what to look for. As long as its been maintained, these motors are known to run practically forever. If neglected, they can be problematic. Areas to look at would be the frame for rust, especially the passenger right rear portion of the frame. Also check the area where the body mounts to the frame (Tub Mounts), and the transmission skid plate area where it mounts to the frame. Drive it, and good luck.

I just finished swapping out a 2.5 to a 4.0, And it was a real challenge getting that squared away but was waaaay worth it.....
Then had to correct the rest of the drivetrain ie. tranny, Transfer with a SYE kit and swapping both gears from 4:11 to 3:07's
because I drive it on the highway way more than I'll ever go off road in a serious manner. Now that I've gotten it in a sweet spot mechanically, I'm going to with a new winch bumper and lighting and rims and slightly wider tires....

I say buy it. Just be careful, I have sunk an additional 125% of my original purchase price back into my little jeep. ...but I do wheel it pretty hard.
Just a couple more mods and it will be done.🤣
